It’s been a 25-year labor of love! Our curator has built an international network of collectors, musicians, and historians who bring rare finds to our attention. Some instruments were purchased at auction or directly from artists, while others were generously donated or willed to us. Now, thanks to our reputation for responsible stewardship, artists and innovators regularly approach us to preserve their legacies.

Because we believe in using our instruments—not locking them behind glass—we offer guided tours only. Every visit is an immersive, interactive experience led by an expert guide. Our standard tours are $50 per person -- and we believe they are worth every penny. 

At other museums, you pay an admission fee and are left to wander around on your own. If the museum is busy, you may have to fight your way through crowds or even be completely unable to view some items because people are in the way. Typical museums keep their musical instruments locked up behind glass or roped off with stanchions so you can only gaze at them from afar -- and you certainly don't get to hear them. At a typical museum, you have to rely on the exhibit signage to explain what you're seeing and there’s often no one around to clarify things or answer any questions about the displays. 

The Museum of Music Technology is very different. All of our tours are fully guided by at least two knowledgeable tour guides who explain everything you’re looking at – often with a great story to go along with it – and are always happy to answer your questions. We limit our tour group size to just 10 people, so you’ll never be stuck in a big crowd. Everyone gets up close to the instruments - so close, you can see the grunge on the guitar fretboards and the worn paint on the synth knobs. Our tours take between 2.5 and 3 hours, spent walking through room after room of instruments that you simply can’t see anywhere else. And you don’t just get to see them – we play many of them live right in front of you.

Where else can you hear a Yamaha GX1? Or get close enough to see the Braille labels on one of Stevie Wonder’s instruments?

Our collection started as our curator’s passion project more than 20 years ago. As the collection grew, our curator expanded into warehouse space at one of his manufacturing facilities. Eventually, the business relocated to a larger facility, allowing the collection to take over the entire original space. Today, we thrive in this building and proudly point out traces of our former-foodservice-facility heritage as part of our tours.

And don’t let our location fool you! Though Harleysville may sound remote, we’re just a minute or two off the Northeast Extension and only 45 minutes from Center City Philadelphia, making us an easy drive from anywhere in the Mid-Atlantic metro area!

We sell gift vouchers that are delivered by email. They will be sent to the buyer then the buyer can either print it or simply forward the email to the recipient. We offer two different types -- one is only redeemable for our standard tour, so if you want to give someone a tour but don't know what time/day they would prefer, that is the one to purchase. We also have general gift cards in the amount of either $50 or $100. Those can be redeemed on any of our offerings including tours, workshops, and live events.  Gift vouchers are good for 2 years from the date of purchase.

We accept electronic and electromechanical instruments, test gear, effects units, amplifiers, prototypes, archives, marketing materials, schematics, and select periodicals. Yes! We offer two unique event spaces:

• A large performance venue that holds up to 100 guests for a performance or 50-60 when set up with tables.
• A smaller classroom space with a TV and PA system, accommodating 16 for workshops or 30 for lectures.
